Orthodontics for Children

As recommended by the Canadian Association of Orthodontists, we prefer to see children by the age of 7 to advise if treatment is required and the best time for that patient to begin orthodontic treatment.  The first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in by that time and cross bites, crowding and other problems can be evaluated. Young patients who are not ready to begin treatment are followed on a regular and consistent basis in our Growth Guidance program.

Some signs or habits that may indicate the need for an early orthodontic treatment are:

  • early or late loss of baby teeth
  • difficulty in chewing or biting
  • mouth breathing
  • thumb/finger sucking
  • crowded teeth
  • jaws that shift or make sounds
  • biting the cheek or roof of the mouth
